Garage Door Remote and Keypad Programming: what to note first

Garage Doors · Kitchener, Ontario

Technician in a mesh cap and safety glasses holding a wrench to a bracket at the bend of the metal door track.

The new car has three buttons in the mirror for garage doors. You held the old remote up to it as the manual said, the light in the car changed, and yet the door ignores it completely. The handheld remote works fine.

Worth answering before the call

How many cars need built-in buttons trained, and what model years are they? Do you own the home, rent it, or is the garage shared with other units? Does the wall button move the door normally right now?

Why does the outdoor keypad struggle in winter?

Small batteries lose output in sustained cold, so a keypad that was fine in autumn can light dimly and transmit too weakly when mornings drop below freezing. Frost and road salt also find their way into buttons and battery contacts over the years. Fresh cells fitted each autumn, clean contacts and a keypad with its slide cover closed carry most households through the season.

Where should the keypad and wall control be mounted?

Out of children's reach and in sight of the door. The door industry's checklist puts wall-mounted push buttons at least about one and a half metres above the floor, in clear view of the door and away from moving parts, and outdoor keypads follow the same idea beside the door. Keypads are programmed before mounting, then fixed with the screws and anchors suited to the wall.
